Cu zeci de ani in urma Fukuyama decreta sfarsitul istoriei prin victoria globala a democratiei liberale vestice asupra comunismului. In zilele noastre constatam ca oponentul democratiei a devenit insasi capitalul reprezentat de partide de dreapta care evolueaza (evolutia nu inseamna neaparat progres; si boala evolueaza) pas cu pas spre extrema dreapta. Tinerii incep sa voteze tot mai mult cu picioarele, dupa cum spune autorul articolului, organizand si participand la marsuri si miscari de protest. Si asta pentru ca s-au saturat sa se milogeasca la clasa politica pentru a face lucrurile pentru care au fost alesi si nu cele pentru care au fost platiti. <<If structural reform proves impossible, then American capitalism will prove incompatible with liberal democracy. In that event, the millennial generation—the generation that birthed Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter—is likely to become further radicalized.
Yet Americans need not fear the new radicalism, for it may be the last, best hope for democracy in America. Just as the Wobblies did for the Progressive movement a century ago, and as the Reds did for the New Deal coalition during the Great Depression, the radicals could give the reformers the leverage they need to defend democracy from the ravages of corporate rule. But first we will have to reclaim the basic rights that make such a democracy possible.>>
